As part of my Radio Controlled Aircraft Intersession, we were able to arrange an amazing tour throughout the Miramar MCAS. The tour went like this:
- An up close and personal look at an operational F-18.
- Flying the official F-18 simulators – Each student was able to spend 10 minutes in this hyper-realistic training simulator which housed a complete operational F-18 cockpit. The most popular (self-chosen) missions were: attempting to fly under the Coronado Bridge, air-surface rocket attack on High Tech High, and bombing downtown San Diego. Personally, I chose an air-surface rocket attack on my home in La Mesa. Success! Understandably, we were not able to take pictures in the simulator.
- We then were joined by another marine who gave us an interior tour of his operational C-130. It was dark out so it was entirely phone-flashlight led. We weren’t able to take pictures in it’s amazing cockpit.
- We wrapped up with checking out the Blue Angel’s “Big Albert”.
What a fantastic visit!
